I work in the mining industry. Working in such a field can be tedious, as many jobs are. I work by myself most of the time, well the rest of the crew is eyesight away but the operation I run doesn’t require more than one person.

This morning, after getting the wet plant going, I was making my usual rounds making sure everything was working properly I got to thinking of something my pastor had said on Sunday “God uses the brokenness of life to balance out His gifts” The word brokenness stuck with me. As I was watching the finished rock fall off the conveyor belt God brought the word brokenness back to mind. That got me thinking deeper. “Life is like a Crusher.”

Before I go on I need to explain the operation so you better understand. First we use a bulldozer to mine the dirt and rock the dozer pushes it in a pile, where a front end loader picks up the material and dumps it into a feeder. From there it goes over a series of conveyor belts and is dumped onto a screen, there are different size screens depending on what material we are making. From the screen it goes to the crusher where the rock is crushed and dumped onto another belt that takes it to yet another screen the rock small enough to fall through goes to a belt where it is dumped onto the ground and the rock that is too big to fall through the screen is taken by conveyor back through the crusher. The material that hit the ground is taken by a loader and feed into the wet or wash plant. The screen on the wash plant will separate the dirt, sand and rock, using water and different sized screens. The dirt is pumped to the clarifier where a chemical call flocculent bonds to it and causes it to drop and it is eventually pumped to the waste pond. The sand falls into a series of sand screws across a dewatering screen and then to the ground, the rock goes through a washer as well and falls off the conveyor to the ground. The sand and rock are then stockpiled by another loader. The material is then used for various applications from concrete, to asphalt and many other projects.

You may ask how this process relates to life. Well to get the picture we must go back to the beginning. We have to go all the way back to the bulldozer.

The Bulldozer represents birth as the bulldozer mines the earth it is “new” and has yet to be manipulated by man. The first loader represents your life before Christ, that bucket of dirt is you, yes you have a use but there is so much more. You are “feed” into life and travel over life’s “conveyor” belt. The crushers represent life’s bumps, bruises, fractures, and brokenness. It represents all over life’s trials that break our spirit. And until you find Christ you will be like the larger rock that I said will go back through the crusher, it’s a never ending vicious circle.

The loader that feeds the wash plant represents Jesus. Once you come to Christ, He picks up the pieces and begins the process of cleaning you up. You go across His “cleansing” screen and the first thing He does is takes the dirt or the sin in your life and pumps it to the waste pond, or The Sea of Forgetfulness. The rock represent your broken heart that heart that has be shattered by life. The sand represents your broken spirit, and reminds us that God can use even the smallest remnants for His good.

The last loader the one that takes the broken rock and sand and stockpiles it represents the Holy Spirit. He takes you or “leads” you to a place where God can take all those broken pieces and make you something grand and beautiful. All those fractures that you though were useless are now what bond you together with Christ.

Now with all things built, the wear and tear of everyday life will break us down, as traffic on asphalt will eventually wear it out to where it has to be refinished, we all get wore down in the same way.

That’s when God picks us back up and dumps us in the wash plant again. So He can take us and make us even something bigger and better.
